Show-Lesson

“Literature, music and cinema in the second half of the 20th century”

The idea of a show-lesson originated from my strong wish to draw young people towards books and reading – so unpopular in this day and age – starting from the world which fascinates them most, that is to say the musical one.

My intent was to arouse their interest and curiosity by showing them that so many of their favourite groups are passionate readers and use either literary works or their cinema remakes as the basis for their lyrics or as backdrops to their video-clips because they deal with burning issues or give valuable teachings.

The title of the project was “Literature, music and cinema in the second half of the 20th century” and the “lesson” part was based on the presentation of English-speaking writers who, in a century of shocking contradictions, braved themes like war, consumerism, education, historical memory with courage and determination. The writers we considered came from different countries (Great Britain, America but also Japan and India) and their works ranged from prose to poetry, from fantasy to horror.

The “show” part, instead, was made possible by the fact that my family is a musical one! Our band, Missing Link, included my sons, Joshua (guitarist and singer) and Shane (drummer), my husband Paul Giardini (electric basses,  acoustic guitars and singer) and myself (keyboardist and singer). Our band was joined by students of the school as singers and we matched each writer to a well-known music group, touching several different music genres, from rock with U2 to funky with RHCP, from psychedelic rock with Pink Floyd to thrash metal with Metallica or heavy metal with Iron Maiden.

What a memorable adventure!!! It was the starting point of the project English or… Nothing!!!
